Timeline Vodcast: School-Based Violence

Published

on

Every child has the right to attend school and be safe. School attendance by students should be free of fear and all forms of assault. In cases where schools provide quality, inclusive and safe education, children can learn, build friendships and gain the critical skills they need to navigate social situations. In the best circumstances, school puts children on the path to a promising future.

But for too many girls and boys worldwide, school is where they experience violence.
School-based violence refers to all forms of violence that take place in and around schools and is experienced by students and perpetrated by other students, teachers and other school staff – UNESCO

Many Children in school today are susceptible and at risk of experiencing bullying, harassment, verbal abuse, sexual abuse and exploitation, corporal punishment and other forms of humiliation that can come from a peer, a teacher or even a school authority. But that is not all, children also experience school violence associated with gang culture, weapons and fighting.

Extensive research conducted by UNICEF indicates that school violence is more likely to occur against children who are perceived as being “different” in any way. This may include factors such as their physical appearance, ethnic, linguistic, cultural background, gender, social status, and disability. Children who do not conform to gender norms and stereotypes are also at an increased risk of being subjected to violence.

The consequences for victims of school-based violence are those that should not be ignored. While some suffer educational consequences that could undermine their sense of belonging at school and affect continued engagement in education, others face health consequences that threaten their mental health and well-being. School violence can also cause physical injuries and harm, inflicting prolonged pain on the victims.

Finding long-lasting solutions to this is a responsibility of everyone. UNICEF recommends adopting laws prohibiting corporal punishment and other forms of violence, developing codes of conduct and other safeguarding measures in schools, setting up confidential and safe reporting mechanisms in schools, training teachers and school staff on positive discipline, classroom management, peaceful conflict resolution and many more.

Today’s Timeline episode highlights the issue of school-based violence and seeks to find ways to actualize safer school environments for children, teachers and everyone alike.
