Timeline Vodcast: Tolerance
Tolerance is a fundamental value that underpins peaceful coexistence among individuals, communities, and nations. It involves accepting and respecting the diversity of cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles that exist in our world. In today’s globalized society, tolerance is more crucial than ever, as we face increasing social, economic, and political divisions.
Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human-UNESCO
The UN acknowledges tolerance as a crucial element in advancing human rights, social justice, and sustainable development, and consistently strives to promote it. But despite this, intolerance persists. UNHCR says one in five people worldwide experience discrimination based on their religion, ethnicity, or nationality.
The consequences of intolerance are far-reaching. Social exclusion, marginalization, and violence undermine social cohesion and stability. Discrimination hinders economic growth, as diverse perspectives and talents are not utilized. Creativity, innovation, and progress are stifled, as diverse ideas and experiences are not shared and valued.
However, there is hope. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 16 promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice, and effective institutions. International organizations advocate for tolerance and human rights worldwide. These efforts are crucial in promoting tolerance and addressing the root causes of discrimination.
