Timeline Vodcast | Gloria Obi Discusses Nutrition-Deficiency Diseases
In this episode, we discuss the critical issue of nutritional deficiency diseases, which affect over 2 billion people worldwide, often referred to as “hidden hunger.” These deficiencies, including Vitamin A, Iron, Iodine, Zinc, and Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM), have severe impacts on health, particularly in low-income countries where malnutrition is a leading cause of mortality among children.
These deficiencies result from poor diet choices, poverty, food insecurity, and inadequate nutrition education. Nutritional deficiencies have profound impacts on both children and adults. In children, they lead to stunted growth, learning difficulties, and increased susceptibility to diseases. In adults, they cause reduced productivity, chronic fatigue, and mental health issues. Pregnant women face increased risks of complications and maternal mortality due to insufficient nutrients.
To combat these issues, strategies include dietary diversification, food fortification, supplementation programs, nutrition education, and government interventions to enhance food security.
Join us as we explore the causes, impacts, and solutions to nutritional deficiency diseases, and learn how these strategies can improve global health outcomes.
