Timeline Vodcast | Femicide
Femicide, or feminicide, refers to the intentional killing of women and girls because of their gender. It is recognized as the most extreme manifestation of violence against women and is often driven by deeply rooted societal norms, gender discrimination, and power imbalances. Femicide can occur in various contexts, including domestic violence, honor killings, and sexual violence, and it is frequently perpetrated by intimate partners or family members.
In 2023, approximately 51,100 women and girls were killed globally by intimate partners or family members, accounting for 60% of all female homicides. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for effective interventions and support systems to prevent such violence and protect potential victims. The issue of femicide is a universal problem affecting women in every region, with particularly high rates reported in Africa and the Americas.
Despite growing awareness, femicide remains underreported due to inadequate data collection and societal stigmas that obscure the true scale of the problem. Efforts to address femicide include improving legal definitions, data governance, and support for survivors.
