Timeline Vodcast | Care for older persons

The world is witnessing a dramatic shift in demographics, with the population aged 60 and older projected to surpass 2.1 billion by 2050, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Approximately 80% of these older individuals will reside in low- and middle-income countries, where care systems are often underdeveloped.

Historically, elder care was deeply rooted in familial and cultural traditions, especially in African and Asian societies where extended families provided support. However, urbanization, smaller family units, and modern economic pressures have disrupted these models, leaving many older adults isolated or reliant on fragmented care services. Challenges such as elder abuse, inadequate healthcare, financial insecurity, and social isolation exacerbate the difficulties faced by aging populations globally.

Addressing these issues requires transformative strategies. Investments in healthcare access, reforming pension systems, and fostering community-based support networks are critical steps. Policies recognizing informal caregivers and promoting social inclusion of older adults must also be prioritized. By working collectively, governments, organizations, and communities can create sustainable care systems that ensure dignity and well-being for the elderly.

Together, we can shape policies and practices that support our aging populations and honor the invaluable contributions of older generations.
