Timeline Vodcast: Japa Syndrome

Published

on

“Japa” is a popular Nigerian slang used to describe the act of breaking loose, escaping, bolting, fleeing, or disappearing quickly from a situation, often in a swift and urgent manner.

Japa is a Yoruba word used widely among Nigerian youths and in popular culture. It is another term for emigration from the shores of one’s country in search of “greener pastures” or better life away from home.

In recent years, it has become a common phenomenon for citizens to deploy any migration strategy, conventional or unconventional to “escape” from the “hard life” experienced in Nigeria and relocate to other parts of the world, with no hope of returning back to their homeland.

Insecurity, conflicts, economic hardship, corruption, poor educational system and infrastructure etc are common factors that triggers the Japa syndrome.

Is Japa syndrome positive or negative? The answer is relative.
